Our 51st season is upon us at the Arundel Yacht Club. The Ropewalk has been opened and cleaned, boats put in, the deck is set up, the galley has been cleaned and the water turned on. Thank you to everyone who helped out opening the Ropewalk this year. It’s always fun seeing members come back together again. Once again we had a great turnout to help open the club. We have a full social calendar and a number of boating activities planned for the 2008 season. Please visit our web site, www.arundelyachtclub.org, which webmaster John Standish so capably maintains for us for any information on dates and activities.
After an inordinately long and snowy winter, the spring so far has seemed equally short. I’m probably not alone but my boat never peeked out from under its winter cover until May 10, at least two weeks later than is typical. Now it’s nearly Memorial Day Weekend and the bottom is still not painted. Regardless of my plight, I’m pleased to be able to report there are several members’ boats tied up to the docks waiting for warm weather and gentle breezes. Besides Night Music, who wintered over, Dawn Patrol was the first arrival this season. The dock assignments and slip waiting list are updated and posted in the club.
The 2008 AYC social schedule was officially launched with another very enjoyable Ice Breaker gathering at the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust on March 1. About 65 members attended and given this year’s winter, everyone appreciated it! Before we realize it, we will be well into the rest of our social events.
Ways & Means
The House is in order and ready for another season. Thank you to all those who cleaned and organized on Spring Work Day! The calendar is there and please remember to record your name, the number in your party, and the time your party starts/ends on the day you plan on having a group of less than 20 people at the club. You may not set up for your party earlier than one hour before your event. Please look for the House Rules to be posted by the calendar asap.
Dockmaster Chris Audley applauds the following members for a job well done!
Junior Sailing classes will be held from the end of June through the middle of August. We are holding two week sessions this year to accommodate everyone’s busy schedules, with the option of taking more than one session. Instructor Matt Doyle will be returning and heading the program along with two Jr. Instructors. Schedules and applications will be available on our web site, or contact Amy Bath at email@example.com.
The 2008 Boon Island race is set for Saturday, June 21st. This is a change from previous years when the race was held on a Sunday. The change in the day is in response to input from last year’s race participants.
Would you like to build your confidence in sailing? We hope to get a group of women together to learn or brush up on the basics of sailing several nights this summer. We plan to start using the small Optis in the basin and then perhaps go out in larger boats together for some non-competitive fun. Picnics to follow back at the Ropewalk.
