Our 51st season is upon us at the Arundel Yacht Club. The Ropewalk has been opened and cleaned, boats put in, the deck is set up, the galley has been cleaned and the water turned on. Thank you to everyone who helped out opening the Ropewalk this year. It’s always fun seeing members come back together again. Once again we had a great turnout to help open the club. We have a full social calendar and a number of boating activities planned for the 2008 season. Please visit our web site,, which webmaster John Standish so capably maintains for us for any information on dates and activities.
This year the board will focus on strengthening our committees. We feel that by having active and involved committees, more members will enjoy the club. Please consider joining one of them; there is not a large time commitment involved and it’s another great way to experience the Arundel Yacht Club. We have a sign-up sheet above the social calendar or you can use the e-mail addresses of the committee chairs found on our web site.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the Ropewalk this season enjoying this very special spot on the Kennebunk River.

After an inordinately long and snowy winter, the spring so far has seemed equally short. I’m probably not alone but my boat never peeked out from under its winter cover until May 10, at least two weeks later than is typical. Now it’s nearly Memorial Day Weekend and the bottom is still not painted. Regardless of my plight, I’m pleased to be able to report there are several members’ boats tied up to the docks waiting for warm weather and gentle breezes. Besides Night Music, who wintered over, Dawn Patrol was the first arrival this season. The dock assignments and slip waiting list are updated and posted in the club.
Remember the spring shoulder season - each member is entitled to 4 days gratis dockside for the purposes of spring commissioning. This is a great and convenient opportunity to get your boat outfitted and cleaned up for the season. If you want to take advantage of a dockside stay before the slips are filled, please contact Dockmaster Chris Audley in order to help us keep track of boats coming and going.

The 2008 AYC social schedule was officially launched with another very enjoyable Ice Breaker gathering at the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust on March 1. About 65 members attended and given this year’s winter, everyone appreciated it! Before we realize it, we will be well into the rest of our social events.
Members should note that this year’s social calendar looks a lot more “normal” following last year’s very busy schedule that included some events connected to the 50th anniversary. As discussed at the annual meeting, we have also removed a couple of very low interest events from the calendar.
There are also some noteworthy things to point out regarding two of our most popular events. First, the Boon Island Race will be moved back to a Saturday this year (June 21), which means that the Chicken BBQ will be on Friday, June 20. The second item is to remind everyone that the AYC/KRC Cocktail Party is at AYC this year, on Saturday, July 12.
Another event change this year will be the Fishing Derby/Pot Luck. The date has been moved one week later in the summer to Saturday, August 9. While we will still have a fishing contest during the day, we will be encouraging non-fishing members to attend the pot luck. There will be more about this on the announcement.
Have a great season!

Ways & Means
The House is in order and ready for another season. Thank you to all those who cleaned and organized on Spring Work Day! The calendar is there and please remember to record your name, the number in your party, and the time your party starts/ends on the day you plan on having a group of less than 20 people at the club. You may not set up for your party earlier than one hour before your event. Please look for the House Rules to be posted by the calendar asap.
If anyone would like to donate a toaster-oven in better shape than the one there now we would be happy to receive it. The kitchen could also use some extra dish towels (please take home and launder the ones you use).
We look forward to another fun and friendly season at The Rope Walk. Too many cooks never spoil the soup in our kitchen!

The 2008 Boon Island race is set for Saturday, June 21st. This is a change from previous years when the race was held on a Sunday. The change in the day is in response to input from last year’s race participants.
Race application registration forms will be mailed out to past race participants and other potential entrants the week of May 19th. Last year we had ten participants. We’re hoping for at least 12 this year. All participants are invited to attend the Chicken BBQ at the Arundel Yacht Club on Friday evening, June 20th.
Any race boat requiring dockage at the Arundel Yacht Club on the Friday night before the race should contact Dave James at 967-3030 or e-mail him at to make suitable arrangements.
Interested in Ladies Sailing?
Would you like to build your confidence in sailing? We hope to get a group of women together to learn or brush up on the basics of sailing several nights this summer. We plan to start using the small Optis in the basin and then perhaps go out in larger boats together for some non-competitive fun. Picnics to follow back at the Ropewalk.
Contact Anne Gould via e-mail at or phone 967-0227 if you have any questions or would like to join us!
